Literature Improvisation Assignment

Overview: Working in pairs, students will choose one of the ten situations (from full length plays) offered in the packet and formulate a 2 to 3 minute directed improvisation. The goal of this assignment is to give a clear, practical understanding of the lessons we have discussed on goals, tactics, physicalizers and intensifiers. It is expected that students synthesize and incorporate them.

Process: The process will be centered on the choices made by each actor. The basic situation is already set, but the subtext is to be determined through individual GOTE sheets and group decisions. Experiment with different goals and tactics and notice how they affect your partner, decide on the most effective combination for the presentation.

There will be time in class devoted to rehearsal but students are encouraged to continue rehearsals outside of regular class sessions.

Writing: Through answering all the questions in the GOTE sheet model in Lesson 6 (pps 56, 57 in text) and any others that are relevant (for additional ideas, see "Character Analysis Guidelines" in this text and online), students will work on building their characters. The completed assignment will be one page in length. The GOTE sheet is due on the day of the performance. As an intent paper, it will not be accepted late. Be explicit as to your character goals and the tactics your character employs. List your use of physicalizers and intensifiers, if any. Here is a sample GOTE sheet for the 1st graded assignment

Grading: Each student will be evaluated on the incorporation of the information in Lessons 1 through 6 in their performance as well as their written work. Bring your GOTE sheet and an evaluation form with you on the day you perform. Your performance can earn you up to 75 points and a complete GOTE sheet can earn you an additional 30 points. The GOTE sheet will not be accepted late.
